A vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre automatic arrived at Ross Watch Repairs not working. The customer also wanted a new watch glass, but replacing it was not the only way to improve its appearance.
We sourced original parts for the repair, fitted new generic replacement hands and carefully polished the watch’s original plexiglass rather than replacing it. The crystal came up with a fresh, near-new appearance, allowing an original component to stay with the watch.
The aim was to get the watch working again while retaining original components wherever practical. Polishing the existing crystal helped preserve its familiar appearance without fitting a replacement glass.
Watch: vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre automatic. Supplied watch number: 904511.

A Vintage JLC Automatic That Had Stopped Working
The first priority was the non-running watch. Our task was to repair the existing automatic watch, not simply improve how it looked from the outside.
For this particular repair, we were able to source the original parts needed. That was an important part of the job: we could work with the vintage mechanism rather than replace the entire movement.
Parts availability must be assessed individually. Being able to obtain original parts for this JLC does not mean every component for every vintage model will be available. Our Jaeger-LeCoultre watch repair service starts with an assessment of the watch and the work required.

Polishing the Original Plexiglass Instead of Replacing It
The customer initially asked for a new glass. After assessing the existing plexiglass, we found that it could be improved through polishing instead.
We polished the original crystal to restore its clarity and appearance. The result was a much clearer view of the dial without discarding the glass already fitted to the watch.
Plexiglass is an acrylic material. Surface scratches on suitable acrylic watch crystals can often be reduced by polishing; polyWatch’s information on plastic watch-crystal polishing provides a material-specific example of this. Whether polishing is appropriate for an individual crystal still needs to be assessed.
For this JLC, saving the existing plexiglass achieved the improvement the customer wanted while retaining an original part of the watch.

New Generic Replacement Hands
New hands were also fitted as part of this repair. These were generic replacement hands, not original Jaeger-LeCoultre hands.
The repair therefore combined original parts for the mechanism, the retained crystal and a replacement hand set. For more information about hand-related work, see our guide to watch hand, marker and baton repairs.

Restoration Does Not Have to Mean Replacing Everything
In this case, the customer’s request for a new glass became an opportunity to preserve the existing one. Repairing the watch and improving its appearance did not require every visible component to be replaced.
Preserving a vintage watch’s character is also a theme in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s own discussion of vintage restoration, which explains why excessive intervention can alter a piece’s historical character. That manufacturer programme is separate from the independent RWR repair shown here.
Our Ellesse restoration case study is another example of improving existing components rather than automatically replacing them. The approach differs from watch to watch, but the starting point is the same: assess what can be repaired and what needs replacing.
The Result of This Vintage JLC Repair
The work combined original parts sourced for the repair, a new generic hand set and a carefully polished original plexiglass. The customer’s watch was repaired, and the existing crystal was restored to a fresh appearance rather than being replaced.
For the customer, the original glass no longer needed to be replaced. It could remain part of the watch, with its clarity improved and the vintage appearance retained.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre that has stopped working be repaired?
Many can be assessed for repair. What is possible depends on the fault, condition and parts availability. For this watch, we sourced original parts for the mechanical repair.
Can you polish an old plexiglass watch crystal?
In suitable cases, yes. We polished the original plexiglass on this JLC instead of replacing it. The crystal must be inspected before deciding whether polishing is appropriate.
Were original Jaeger-LeCoultre hands fitted?
No. The new hands fitted to this watch were generic replacement hands. Original parts were sourced for the mechanical repair, and the existing plexiglass was retained.
Will every vintage JLC repair use original parts?
Availability varies. We explain what can be sourced and identify any proposed alternatives before work proceeds, rather than promising original parts for every vintage watch.
Can I bring my JLC in without an appointment?
Yes. Visit The Shard or Canary Wharf for a free initial assessment. The time required for the repair itself will depend on the work and parts needed.
