Christian Dior D45-154 Watch Repair: ETA Movement Replacement & Strap Bars

Real Christian Dior D45-154 repair: faulty one-way time setting, a new ETA quartz movement, and missing strap-retaining bars replaced on both sides.

A Christian Dior D45-154 came into Ross Watch Repairs for servicing with an unusual time-setting fault. The watch was running, but when the crown was used to change the time the hands would only move properly in one direction. Turning the crown the other way did not set the hands as it should.

After assessment, the fault was traced to the quartz mechanism rather than a simple battery issue. We replaced the failed movement with a new ETA quartz movement, transferred and refitted the dial and hands, then tested the setting function again. The watch could once more be adjusted normally in both directions.

There was also a second problem: the strap-retaining bars were missing on both sides of the case. These were replaced with high-quality matching bars so the leather strap could be secured properly.

The Fault: Time Would Only Set in One Direction

When the watch arrived, the problem could be demonstrated directly through the crown. The hands could be moved when the crown was turned one way, but the setting system would not operate correctly in the opposite direction.

This matters because a quartz watch can still appear to be functioning while the internal setting mechanism is damaged or worn. A fresh battery would not correct a fault in the movement’s time-setting components.

Replacing the Failed Quartz Mechanism with a New ETA Movement

Once the fault had been confirmed, we removed the caseback and inspected the existing quartz mechanism. The movement was no longer giving reliable two-way time setting, so replacing the mechanism was the practical repair.

The replacement was a new ETA quartz movement. ETA has supplied Swiss watch movements for decades and movements from the brand are found in many Swiss watches. For this job, the important point was compatibility with the Dior’s existing dial, hands, crown and date display.

Removing the Dial and Hands

A movement replacement requires more than dropping a new mechanism into the case. The dial and hands have to be removed from the old movement without damaging the dial surface, then transferred and aligned correctly on the replacement movement.

Once the hands were refitted, their clearance and alignment were checked before the movement and dial assembly were returned to the case.

Testing the Watch After the ETA Movement Replacement

The repaired watch was then tested through the crown again. This time the hands responded normally when the time was adjusted in either direction, confirming that the original setting fault had been resolved.

Missing Strap Bars Replaced on Both Sides

The movement was not the only issue found on this watch. The bars that secure the leather strap to the case were missing on both sides. Leaving a strap attached without the correct retaining hardware risks the watch separating from the strap during wear.

We fitted high-quality replacement retaining bars on both sides and checked that the strap was secured correctly before the watch was returned to the customer.

About This Christian Dior D45-154

This Swiss-made D45-154 has a distinctive gold-tone multi-sided case, Roman numeral dial, date display at 6 o’clock and a blue leather strap. The case and dial show the character expected from an older watch, while the new ETA movement restores the watch’s quartz timekeeping and setting function.

For older quartz watches, replacing a complete movement can sometimes be more reliable and economical than trying to repair individual components within a worn or failing mechanism. The correct choice depends on the movement, the fault, parts availability and the condition of the rest of the watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a watch only let you change the time in one direction?

A fault in the movement’s internal setting mechanism can stop the crown from driving the hands correctly in one direction. On this Christian Dior D45-154, replacing the quartz movement resolved the problem.

Can a Christian Dior quartz movement be replaced?

Often, yes. The movement has to be identified and a suitable replacement sourced. Dial, hand, stem, date and case compatibility all need to be checked before a replacement movement is fitted.

What movement was fitted to this Dior D45-154?

This repair used a new ETA quartz movement. We have not treated the job as a simple battery replacement because the original mechanism had a time-setting fault.

Can missing watch strap bars be replaced?

Yes, where suitable replacement hardware is available. This D45-154 arrived with the strap-retaining bars missing on both sides, and high-quality replacements were fitted as part of the repair.

Can I post a Christian Dior watch to Ross Watch Repairs?

Yes. We offer a UK postal service through our Canary Wharf branch. Use Royal Mail Special Delivery and include your contact details, return address and a description of the fault.
