A TAG Heuer Formula 1 WAU1110 arrived at Ross Watch Repairs with extensive internal water damage. Moisture had entered through the crown and spread throughout the watch, leaving the quartz movement, crown area, movement holder and inside of the caseback heavily corroded. The reassuring part was that the original dial and hands had escaped the damage.
This was far beyond a routine battery replacement. We booked the watch in for a full water-damage service, fitted a replacement movement and an original TAG Heuer crown, and addressed the internal corrosion. Because the required movement and crown were already in stock, the repair took just one week. We also included a complimentary polish to remove the majority of visible scratches from the suitable exterior surfaces.

01 · The problem
TAG Heuer Formula 1 WAU1110: What Was Wrong With the Watch?
The Formula 1 WAU1110 is a quartz-powered TAG Heuer sports watch. When this example was opened, the scale of the damage was immediately apparent. Corrosion was not confined to a single contact or the battery compartment: it was spread across the movement and the surrounding internal components.
Our inspection revealed
- Extensive rust and oxidation on the quartz movement, particularly around the battery and movement plate.
- Corrosion affecting the crown and its associated components, the area through which moisture had entered.
- Rust damage to the movement holder and inner caseback, showing how far the moisture had travelled inside the case.
- An unaffected original dial and hands, which could thankfully be retained rather than replaced.

The workshop photographs show why water damage should never be judged solely by how a watch looks from the outside. The dial appeared relatively unaffected, yet the movement beneath it had suffered severe corrosion.
02 · The cause
How Did Water Get Into the TAG Heuer Through the Crown?
On this watch, the crown was identified as the point of moisture entry. The crown is one of the components that helps protect a watch’s movement from water. If its sealing arrangement becomes worn, damaged or compromised, moisture can reach the mechanism and cause progressive corrosion.
As TAG Heuer’s official care guidance explains, water resistance is not permanent: seals age, and impacts can affect critical components such as crowns, pushers and crystals. A watch’s original water-resistance specification should not be taken as proof that its seals are still effective many years later.

Important Once water has entered, the priority is to investigate promptly. Drying the outside of the watch, fitting another battery or leaving it in a warm place will not remove established internal corrosion.
03 · The repair
Full Service: New Movement, Original TAG Heuer Crown and Corrosion Treatment
Given the extent of the rust, this was not a suitable candidate for a simple battery reseal or a light Mini Service. The watch required a more comprehensive repair.
The full-service work addressed the water-damaged internal components and included a replacement quartz movement and a genuine TAG Heuer crown. The corroded areas around the caseback and movement holder also required attention during the repair and reassembly.
Importantly, the original black TAG Heuer dial and hands had not been damaged by the moisture. These could be retained, avoiding unnecessary replacement of the parts that give this Formula 1 its distinctive appearance.

This distinction matters: when water has severely attacked a quartz movement, restoring reliable operation may require a new movement rather than trying to reuse heavily corroded electronic components. The right approach depends on the condition of the specific watch, the availability of compatible parts and the customer’s priorities.
Work carried out
- Inspection Corrosion found across the movement, crown, movement holder and inner caseback.
- Full water-damage service The rust was too extensive for a battery reseal or Mini Service.
- Replacement quartz movement Fitted in place of the heavily corroded original.
- Genuine TAG Heuer crown Fitted to replace the crown through which moisture had entered.
- Corroded areas addressed The caseback and movement holder received attention during repair and reassembly.
- Original dial and hands retained Undamaged by the moisture, so no replacement was needed.
- Complimentary polish Reduced the majority of visible scratches on suitable surfaces.
04 · Turnaround
Why Did This Repair Take Only One Week?
Despite the severity of the damage, the turnaround was approximately one week. We already held both the suitable replacement movement and the original TAG Heuer crown in stock, so there was no need to wait for those components to arrive from a supplier.
Parts availability often determines how quickly a water-damaged watch can be repaired. Some repairs may take longer when original crowns or movements must be specially ordered. The one-week completion was specific to this job, not a guaranteed turnaround for every TAG Heuer water-damage repair.
05 · Polishing
Complimentary Polishing to Reduce Scratches
As part of this repair, the watch received a complimentary exterior polish. The aim was to reduce the majority of the visible scratches and improve the finish of suitable areas of the stainless-steel case and bracelet.
Polishing can improve surface wear, but it cannot always remove every deep mark, and it must be carried out appropriately for each surface and finish. We treated the cosmetic work as an addition to the essential internal repair, not a substitute for it.

06 · The result
The Result: A TAG Heuer Formula 1 Back in Working Order
After a full water-damage service, replacement of the compromised movement and crown, and attention to the rusted internal parts, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 WAU1110 was returned to working order. The original dial and hands were saved, the internal repair was completed in around a week, and the complimentary polish improved the overall appearance.
Important A repair does not automatically mean a watch has regained its original water-resistance rating. Water resistance must be assessed through appropriate seal checks and pressure testing; no passing pressure-test result is claimed in this case study. We recommend having any watch examined before exposing it to water following a moisture-related repair.

Advice
What Should You Do If Your TAG Heuer Has Water Inside?
If you notice mist beneath the crystal, unusual timekeeping, a stopped movement or evidence of water inside the case, avoid operating the crown or pushers unnecessarily. Keep the watch away from further moisture and arrange a professional inspection as soon as possible. The longer corrosion is allowed to develop, the greater the risk of additional damage to the dial, hands and other components.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a water-damaged TAG Heuer Formula 1 be repaired?
Often, yes, although it depends on how far the moisture has spread and whether movements, crowns and other suitable parts are available. Severe corrosion can make movement replacement more practical than repairing the original electronics.
Will a new battery fix a water-damaged TAG Heuer?
Not where internal corrosion has already damaged the movement. A battery change alone will not remove rust or repair compromised movement components, crown seals or case surfaces.
How long does a TAG Heuer water-damage repair take?
This particular Formula 1 WAU1110 was completed in around one week because its replacement movement and original TAG Heuer crown were in stock. Other jobs vary according to damage, parts availability and testing requirements.
Is my TAG Heuer waterproof again after a repair?
Do not assume so. Water resistance depends on the condition of the crown, seals, case and other components and should be confirmed by suitable testing before the watch is exposed to water.
